Department B was started in 1989 by our co-founders Parvaze Bashir and Tim Waskiewicz. It all started when Parvaze Bashir, a successful physician recruiter, recognized that his clients were constantly asking for business advice on establishing and running their medical practices. So Parvaze Bashir teamed up with Tim Waskiewicz, a savvy medical practice administrator, and launched Department B to provide medical billing services to small medical practices on an outsourced basis.

Department B was originally known by its former name: PM&R Resources. We originally focused on providing medical billing services to Physiatrists, or physicians that practice within the physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) board certified medical specialty. By mastering the complex reimbursement challenges of the highly specialized field of PM&R, we helped clients become much more profitable, and as a result, quickly developed a national client base.

In 1996, we expanded our services to include practice management consulting. Through our work in providing medical billing services on a national basis, we had developed benchmarks and a knowledgebase of industry best practices that we began to offer on a project-basis through our practice management consulting services. And drawing on our co-founder Parvaze Bashir’s roots as a physician recruiter, we also realized that we could help clients grow by recruiting additional physicians or employees to their practices. So we also began providing physician recruitment services.

As our client base grew, we began to feel the strain of our labor-intensive business processes and the mountains of paperwork we were processing for our clients every day. Our clients were using any one of scores of different practice management systems and they were submitting volumes of paperwork to us daily by fax, courier, or express mail. So in 2001, we developed a custom web-based practice management software solution for our clients and back-office staff which reduced data entry errors, streamlined workflow, and eliminated the paperwork. Four years later and we are continually improving and customizing our technology solution based upon the ever-changing needs of our clients.

Department B has always grown with a focus on solving real customer problems. That’s why in 2004 we also began offering transcription services to our clients. You see, at Department B, we realized that delays by third-party transcription providers were slowing down the collections process for our clients by 5-10 days or more. But by teaming up with Department B for medical billing and transcriptions services, our clients began improving their collections process and cash flow considerably.

Over the past couple of years, we have grown our client base and expertise to include a variety of medical specialties far beyond our original focus on physical medicine and rehabilitation. To reflect our broader expertise and services, we changed our name in 2005 to Department B and launched a new marketing campaign to communicate the full breadth of the back-office services we provide to small medical practices.
